Looking Back at Banners

The art of banner making is one of the oldest in the world. Even today, people still continue to make banners or flags. The output is generally the same, consisting of a cloth or fabric with a slogan, logo or image printed or stitched. The term “banner” actually comes from the Latin word “bandum”, which stands for the cloth used to make flags.

Banners have even been mentioned in the Old Testament. These were used to position soldiers and rally them towards battle. One banner called Sashimono was displayed by Japanese soldiers so that they can see their allies and opponents in battle. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Sashimono was widely used in Japan. Banners were even present during the Crusades and other great battles held in various places around the world.

Banners are present in the yearly Palio race, which is held in Italy. The contest is held in various towns across the country. The ultimate winner is eventually given a silk banner.

Between a flag and a banner, the former features a flagpole or mast, while the rest of the material swirls and waves. The flag is also placed horizontally on a vertically standing flagpole. As for a banner, it features a sleeve at the top of the vertical side. The banner is hung in a vertical way on a smaller pole.

At present, banners come in various forms. You will find banners even on the internet, which are widely used by website and business owners.
